Privacy Policy for TalkMate

TalkMate (“the App”, “we”, “us”) is operated by Moonlit Studio. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By creating an account and using TalkMate, you agree to this policy.

1. Information we collect

• Account information: your email address and a password. Passwords are never stored in plain text — they are stored only as a salted one-way hash (bcrypt).
• Profile information you provide: name, gender, date of birth, country, native language, short bio, and an avatar colour.
• Messages: the text messages you send to other users are stored so they can be delivered and shown in your conversation history.
• Call information: we record the fact that a call took place (e.g. participants and counts, used for ratings/stats). We do not record, store, or listen to the audio of your calls.
• Ratings: the like/dislike and star ratings you give or receive after a conversation.
• Presence/usage: whether you are currently online, used to power matchmaking and buddy lists.

2. How your calls work (audio)

Voice calls use WebRTC and are sent in real time between participants. Audio is encrypted in transit (DTLS-SRTP). When a direct connection isn’t possible, audio is relayed through a TURN server purely to pass it along — it is not recorded or retained. We do not store call audio anywhere.

3. How we use information

• To create and secure your account and keep you signed in.
• To match you with practice partners and enable calls and messaging.
• To show your profile, online status, and reputation (ratings) to other users so they can decide whether to talk with you.
• To operate, maintain, and improve the App.

4. Information shared with other users

By design, other users of TalkMate can see your profile (name, avatar, bio, country, language, and your aggregate ratings/stats) and can receive the messages you send them. Please don’t share information you wish to keep private.

5. Service providers

We use third-party infrastructure to run the App:

• Cloud hosting for our backend server and database.
• TURN relay provider to relay call audio when a direct peer-to-peer connection cannot be established.

These providers process data only to provide their service to us. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own advertising or marketing.

6. Data retention & deletion

We keep your account and content while your account is active. You can request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by emailing us at the address below; we will delete your account data within 30 days of a verified request, except where we must retain certain information to comply with law.

7. Security

Connections to our servers use encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), call audio uses DTLS-SRTP, and passwords are stored only as bcrypt hashes. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

8. Children

TalkMate is not directed to children. You must be at least 18 years old to use the App. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18; if you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will remove it.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the App.
